How to Measure a Dog for a Coat

17 Mar 2021 |

During the colder months of the year, it is important to make sure that our four-legged friends stay warm enough. Many believe that it is only short-haired dog breeds that feel the cold, however, small, lean, ill or injured and old dogs, may also require protection. Additionally, on those really cold winter days even even large dogs with long, thick fur may benefit from some extra insulation.

Why Get a Dog Coat?

If you want to ensure that your pampered pooch stays warm, dry and comfortable this winter, then a cosy dog coat makes the perfect solution. There are a range of factors to consider when trying to find the ideal dog coat for your pup. You should definitely consider your lifestyle and the types of walks that your dog tends to go on. If you tend to take your dog for walks across wet country fields, then it is probably best to opt for a waterproof dog coat. Whereas, if your dog walks tend to be on solid ground through the centre of town, then style may be of greater concern. You should also take into account how active your dog is. If you have a dog that enjoys running around and going long distances, then a lightweight dog coat would be perfect. However, if you have a small or older dog that can only go on fairly short walks, then this might not be so important.

Yet, one of the most important factors to consider when choosing the right dog coat is size and fit. Each dog is unique, not only in breed, colour and personality but also in shape. Therefore, not all styles of dog coat will be suited to your dog’s particular body shape or size. If the coat is too big for your dog then it could be a struggle to keep in place and could potentially hinder their movement. If the coat is too small, it could be tight and cause discomfort to your dog. In order to avoid any issues with fit and sizing, this guide will explain how to measure your dog for a coat.

How to Measure a Dog for a Coat

To determine what size dog coat will provide the best fit, you will need to measure your dog thoroughly. Dog coats are usually labelled as small, medium, large, extra large or extra extra large. In order to understand the exact size that these labels refer to, you should always check the size guide. Different brands often vary when it comes to sizing - a medium in one brand might not refer to the same measurements as a medium in another brand.

Tweed Dog Coat

For any dog coat, there are three key measurements that you need to know: body, chest and neck. First, you should measure the length of your pooches’ top line. To do this, measure the nape of your dog’s neck, from their collar to the base of their tail. To ensure that your measurements are accurate, it is best to ensure that your dog is standing up straight and that they do not move around too much. Next, you need to measure the chest. To do this, you should measure their girth, just behind their front legs. And, finally, you should take measurements of your dog’s neck. This is as easy as putting your dog’s collar on - simply measure around their neck, leaving the same gap as you would for their actual collars (approx. two fingers).

Once you have taken your dog’s measurements, make sure that you note them down so that you can refer to them when it comes to shopping for your new dog coat. It is unlikely that you will need all of these measurements to select a dog coat as most are now adjustable. However, it is handy to have them just in case, especially if your dog is particularly stocky or unusually slim. If your dog measures in-between sizes then it is always advised to opt for the larger option, as this will prevent your dog from experiencing any discomfort or rubbing.
