What to Wear with a Tweed Jacket: Smart Layering Tips

08 Jan 2025 |

If there’s any jacket that can instantly smarten any outfit, it’s a tweed jacket. Even a simple jeans and T-shirt look can make a smart-casual ensemble when you pop on a tweed jacket. It’s such a traditional country wardrobe staple but many don’t always know how to style it, especially when it’s colder. Here’s our guide on what to wear with a tweed jacket: smart layering tips.

Women’s

Whether you have one already in your wardrobe or you’re debating purchasing one for yourself, a tweed jacket can be that key piece to take your outfit to the next level. It screams country lady chic and can be worn across the seasons too, with extra layers when it’s colder outside.

Tweed is a quintessential country classic material and they don’t get much more traditional than a tweed jacket. For women, you can change up the style, depending on the occasion.

Casual occasions

If you’re more of a jeans and a T-shirt kind of woman, a tweed jacket will take your outfit from plain to fabulous instantly. A longer style makes for a more casual style than a shorter, fitted version. Purchasing one in a size up from your usual makes for an oversized fit, perfect for layering underneath when winter hits. The thick and sturdy padding makes it an ideal jacket for cold, dry days. Wrap up warm with a matching hat, scarf and gloves and you’re set for a whole host of outdoor winter occasions.

However, if you’re after more of an everyday jacket, a tweed-print jacket might be more of your style. It’s just like our other waterproof jackets but a more elevated look. The mesh lining makes it a great outer layer for hiking and outdoor activities and the neutral tones make it a versatile piece to wear with just about any outfit. Simply popping a fleece underneath not only adds a warming layer but also a neat style too.

You’ll be pleased to know that it also has lots of pockets so you might not even need a handbag with you when you wear this jacket. The internal drawstring allows you to wear this jacket as loose or as fitted as you prefer, depending on how many layers you have underneath.

For rainy days, wear it with Chelsea boots and skinny jeans. When it’s a heavier downpour, trade the boots for wellies for a practical but still cute look. You can layer thermals and knitwear underneath when it’s cold out or simply wear a collared shirt when it’s springtime.

Smart-casual occasions

A shorter jacket is better for more smart-casual occasions because it’s much more fitted and ladylike. Our traditional Wrelton jacket features light padding so it’s the perfect jacket for those in-between seasons. Of course, you can always add extra layers underneath but the padding should mean you don’t have to. This jacket, in particular, looks amazing with a country checked shirt underneath. Try to keep the colour schemes of the threads on the jacket and the shirt similar to keep the look cohesive. If it’s cold, how about popping on a brightly-coloured jumper? A crew-neck or V-neck ribbed jumper in the same colour gives you an extra layer of warmth whilst still looking feminine and classy.

For an updated style, we’ve updated our Haworth gilet into a jacket, which is ideal for cooler days. The shoulder pad details and silk lining give it that luxurious feeling and the shorter jacket is much better for smart-casual occasions. You’ll see lots of country folk wearing these to festivals, and race days because they’re smart enough without being overly formal. The curved hemline is a small touch but instantly looks more feminine than a straight-cut jacket. Navy and light green tweed give this jacket a usual country feel but the additional features elevate it. For a neat layering tip, you could always add the matching gilet underneath to give the feel of a waistcoat/blazer but without the restrictive feel.

Men’s

Every country gentleman needs a tweed jacket in their wardrobe. They’re so easy to just throw on before you run out of the door, regardless of the errands you’ll be running. We’ve tweaked our designs over the years but for the most part, they’ve stayed similar. That’s because the tweed jacket is so classic that it doesn’t need a massive overhaul.

Casual occasions

Even if you’re wearing a polo shirt and jeans, a tweed jacket can still add something extra to your look. The key is to keep your outfit super casual and just let the tweed do the talking. Whether it’s a plain T-shirt or jumper underneath, the idea is to let the tweed jacket stand out. To dress it down, the key is your footwear! Casual footwear can be anything from boat shoes to trainers but you should still look as put-together and gentlemanly as you can. Any trainers should be kept clean and tidy wherever you’re heading.

For colder days, a cosy fleece will become your go-to mid-layer of choice. You all know we love our Huggate fleeces so whether you opt for a half-zip or full-zip style, it can be a personal preference. Sticking with classic shades of brown, olive, navy and grey gives you a neutral country palette and makes your entire outfit more cohesive.

If you’re heading on a countryside walk, you could opt for walking boots or Wellington boots instead. Both boots definitely suit a tweed jacket but remember that whilst tweed jackets are showerproof, they’re not made for heavy rain. We love our Derby shooting jacket for countryside excursions and the wool blend fabric has been made for maximum durability and longevity. Look after it well and this jacket will last you for years to come.

Smart-casual occasions

If there’s any occasion that’s made for a tweed jacket, it’s a more formal affair. There’s no item that screams country gentleman more than a tweed jacket. Paired with a collared checked shirt and smart shoes, this outfit combination will see you through most smart-casual events, from family gatherings to race days. Brogues and Chelsea boots instantly give off a dressier style and if it’s cold, you can always stick a chunky shooting jumper on top of your shirt.

Our Derby tweed jackets are probably our most traditional style in terms of fit and we’ve kept it that way because it’s such a classic style. Even the classic green colour mixed with coloured thread is traditional but the subtle colours will always look dressier and smart. The padded lining gives it a more practical feeling but still looks super stylish with its collar and brass buttons and zipper. It’s all about those extra details, especially on smart-casual occasions.

Whilst many think they’re hard to wear, tweed jackets are easier to style because they’re such a classic piece. Layering is always the best way to keep warm and it can also be very stylish when you have a select number of pieces to mix and match from. We’re big fans of picking those key layers that you can wear not just under your tweed jacket but any jacket in your wardrobe.
