9 Outfits for Sailing Year-Round in the UK

25 Feb 2025 |

Getting outdoors in the UK is one of our favourite activities but that doesn’t have to mean just the countryside. Sailing is a great hobby, whether you want to go solo or with friends and family. Here are some of our top tips for outfits for sailing year-round in the UK as well as our top nine clothing items that you’ll need for any sailing trip.

Our top tips for outfits for sailing year-round in the UK

If it’s your first time sailing or it’s been quite some time since you last went, here are our top tips when thinking about what to wear or pack for your trip. These tips for outfits for sailing year-round in the UK should see you through any excursion.

  • Opt for comfort and practical items - It’s better to be comfortable and dry when sailing above everything else. Focus on function over fashion and you’ll be warm and safe.
  • If it’s waterproof or windproof, it’s a yes - You need waterproof and windproof items when out sailing so if you already have those items, you’ll make use of them now.
  • Clean shoes with a light-coloured sole are a necessity - Black soles are a no-no on any sailboats as they can leave marks and scuffs on board. Opt for white or tan soles instead.
  • Pack for all weathers but double-check before you leave - The weather is temperamental in the UK so be sure to check the weather before your excursion. However, it can change throughout the day so pack for all weathers.
  • Layers are key - You need to layer on a sailboat, regardless of the temperature before you set. We recommend at least three layers but you can get away with two in the height of summer.
  • Shop your wardrobe first - Gym gear is great for sailing as it’s water-resistant and sweat-wicking. Your regular waterproof jacket should be good enough unless you plan on sailing frequently. If you need sailing gloves, try weightlifting gloves instead as they’re pretty grippy. Don’t rush out to buy brand-new sailing gear because this might be the only sailing trip you ever make!

9 essentials for outfits for sailing year-round in the UK

Sailing isn’t too different to hiking when it comes to your outfit. Think warm, thermal items, waterproof layers and comfort over fashion every time. Here are our nine essentials for outfits for sailing year-round in the UK.

A thermal base layer

The layer closest to your skin should be a thermal or a top with sweat-wicking properties, such as a gym T-shirt. Ideally, it will feature a material with sun protection properties too as it might end up being your only layer in the height of summer. Long sleeves are better when it’s cool but a short-sleeved style is still a great option. Make sure your shoulders are covered as often, this is the part of your body that gets the sun first!

A cosy mid-layer

Whether it’s a fleece jacket or a sports zip-up, choose something that is cosy and comfortable. If it’s too hot for a coat, this might end up being your outer layer so you could switch a fleece for a soft shell jacket instead. Ideally, it will be waterproof as you’ll still get wet! It doesn’t need to have a hood as your waterproof jacket should but a hooded middle layer for warmer days is still a good option.

A windproof and waterproof jacket

This layer will need to be thick during autumn/winter but could be a jacket in a packet during summer. It will usually be cooler than you think. Soft shell jackets are great between seasons. Ideally in red or yellow as they’re easier colours to spot in the sea should you end up in an accident. A changing robe can also be a great alternative, especially if you plan on swimming. The inner fleece lining will get you dry quickly and you can also wear it as a coat anyway!

Waterproof trousers

Again, you’ll inevitably get wet so don’t wear anything light-coloured or heavy. A pair of waterproof trousers over thinner trousers or leggings should see you through sailing. We recommend packing them in your rucksack instead of getting on the boat in them as they can be a little restrictive when moving about.

A hat

This should be a baseball cap or bucket hat ideally but it needs to be snug to your head to avoid it flying off. There are still UV rays during the winter so it’s still a key item. In winter, you might prefer to wear a woolly hat but don’t forget to wash it thoroughly when you get home. Seawater can often give off a strange smell when your item gets dry so throw it in the wash with the rest of your outfit.

Sunglasses

Again, you might think ‘why do I need sunglasses in the middle of winter’? However, they’re still a must because the sun appears at random, even when it’s cold outside. Don’t take an expensive pair though in case you lose or drop them. Sun rays will come from the sky as well as bounce off the water. If you can, get a pair with a lanyard attached so if they fall off your face or head, you won’t lose them to the sea.

Shoes

Your shoes need to have a grippy tread or you’ll be slipping all over the boat. Keep them light but sturdy as you’ll find you often stub your toes on a sailboat. Deck shoes were invented for sailing so why not get yourself a new pair? For a hard-wearing shoe, they’re much more affordable than other styles. We have plenty of options for men and women, perfect for warmer weather. When it’s colder, gym trainers are a better alternative as they’ll keep your feet much warmer.

Something to swim in

Many people enjoy sailing because it means they can swim further afield than their local beach or stream. Of course, you can wear whatever style you want to but for women, a one-piece is definitely more secure than a traditional bikini and much more comfortable. However, if you want to wear something snazzy, you can go for whatever pattern or colour you like!

A life jacket and/or buoyancy aid

You can be the world’s best sailor but in an emergency, you’ll be grateful to have a life jacket. When hiring a boat, these should be provided to you by the hire company so check before you even set off.

These outfits for sailing year-round in the UK might not be as stylish as you might think but we’re firm believers that you should be safe, comfortable and functional first. Maybe you’ll only go once or perhaps it will become your new favourite activity.
