With the winter weather on its way out (hopefully), spring is around the corner, which ultimately brings April showers, which will be here before we know it! Although we might not want to go outside, it’s important to get fresh air most days and if you have a dog, they need daily walks. That’s why you need the most appropriate footwear to throw on every day to leave by the front door: a pair of wellington boots.
The beauty of a pair of wellies is that they’re designed to see you through the entire year, not just a season. When it comes to kids’ wellies, especially younger ones, you won’t want to spend tons on a pair when ultimately, they’ll grow out of them soon. However, you don’t want to scrimp on quality. Our wellies have been designed to be high-quality but affordable, perfect for lots of uses as well as, and even more importantly, easy to clean!
We also know that it can be difficult to get the right size for kids wellies too, which is why we’ve included some tips on that further down this article.
We’ve rounded up a selection of our best kids wellies, perfect for children of all ages! Let’s face it, there’s a lot of adults (big kids) who enjoy splashing around in puddles too, just as much as their children!
Getting the right size
Wellies are probably one of the trickiest types of footwear to fit properly for children, which is why many shoe stores don’t stock them or offer a fit service for them. It’s purely because they don’t fit like regular shoes. The shell is often more flexible whereas the treat is often thicker.
The general rule of thumb is to buy the correct size for your child or if you’d like them to grow into them or will be wearing with extra thick socks, size up one size. It can be a game of trial and error so it might be best to order two sizes and see which pair your child feels most comfortable in. As always with footwear, get them to wear them around the house to get used to them. They are often a little heavier than regular shoes and boots so can take some getting used to. If your child isn’t comfortable with walking just yet, wait to put them in a pair outside. They’ll need to be pretty steady on their feet before walking around outdoors in a pair of wellies.
They should fit snugly but not tightly. Whilst you don’t want your child to get blisters from wearing them out, you also don‘t want them to be too loose or they will fall off in the mud. In fact, the boots might get stuck in the mud whilst your child is free!
Younger children
When it comes to the little ones, you and them will probably prefer a brighter pair of wellies to ensure they’re seen when out and about in the countryside. It can also be fun to let your child pick the colour or pattern that’s their favourite. With several designs having matching puddle suits, you can even get a full matching outfit!
All of our younger children’s wellies come with convenient pull-on loops, perfect for them to be able to pop them onto their own feet when they get the hang of it. Just make sure they’ve got some cosy socks on underneath to keep their toes warm!
We’ve also tried to make them as lightweight as possible because we know children can be unsteady on their feet with heavier shoes on. However, we wanted to make sure the treat was still thick and deep but flexible enough for kids to run around in, splash about in, and squelch around in too!
Our main aim is to make sure our kid’s clothing and shoes are easy to clean. Our wellies should require just a simple wipedown with a damp cloth most days, making them ideal for little ones. Of course, if they’ve got a bit too crazy in the mud, they might require more of a scrub with soapy water and a brush. However, if you do this as soon as you get home, it will make cleaning them so much easier!
We’ve got so many designs for kids' wellies, from flowers and horses, to dinosaurs to ducks. We love bright colours and funky patterns and will be adding more designs as the year goes on.
Older children
When your children get older, they’ll prefer styles that are less childish and more adult. That’s why we created two designs that feel much more grown up. Making wellies that are a perfect blend of functional and stylish is a challenge but we think we’ve managed to do so.
For those teenagers who prefer a classic, neutral style, the Ripon option is a pretty safe bet for them. The deep tread, upper calf buckle and shiny exterior are extremely practical, making them easy to clean and safe for rougher terrains. The knee-length boot is perfect for tucking in tights, leggings or skinny jeans and also leaves plenty of room for thick boot socks or wearing multiple pairs of socks for cold feet!
If your child prefers patterns, our Wistow design is perfect for them. The flying bird print and sky blue background stands out and looks great against dark-coloured trousers and jeans. Once again, our wellies will always feature a thick tread for countryside walks, a glossy shell to make cleaning just a quick wipe away, and a buckle at the top of the boot to secure to their calves properly.
We pride ourselves on producing high-quality products and our Wellington boots, especially for kids, is no different. We know that they might grow out of them (which is why we recommend sizing up slightly so your child grows into them) but they’ve been designed to last for a long time. They’re no different from our adult wellies, apart from the sizing of course, so if you need to grab a pair for yourself, take a look at our men’s and ladies’ ranges.
